About Me

Hi I'm Adelaide and welcome to my blog for Blue Mtns Knits.
Here I journal my creating of hand knits,
To keep and cherish.
To love and give.
To make you feel stylish.
To keep you warm.
To last for years to come.
To grow sustainable making.
To support hand made.
To nurture natural local fibres.
And I hope to inspire you to create too.

All garments and accessories featured on the blog are crafted by hand and by me, Adelaide. Being hand knitted from natural Australian wool, they have a life of their own. A unique body and rustic texture. And they are created with a deep felt love for knitting and wool that together makes every single piece special.

Why I do what I do?

I love the hands on making, the working with yarn, and the envisioning of what two needles and some strings of wool can create.

It has always been a dream of mine to make my own crafty business. After working in the hand knitting industry for eight years I fell ill. Nearly two years later I’m still recovering and I’ve been unable to return to work.

I'm thankful that throughout I’ve had my family and knitting to keep me hopeful and sane! I hand knitted beanies, mittens and scarves for everyone I know. And then I was time to start my dream.

I live in the Blue Mountains and I love it. My knits are inspired by both the beauty and the practical needs of the natural Blue Mountains landscape (especially the cold chill of a snowy winter). This led to the name, Blue Mtns Knits.

All garments and accessories are created from 100% Australian Wool. This is very important to me because I not only believe in using local sustainable produce whenever I can but Australia has a proud heritage of quality wool produce. I use New Wool - a traditional rugged rustic yarn that embodies the true pioneer spirit - and a beautiful Superfine Merino - a luxurious yarn that captures your senses with its rich colours and wonderful soft and cosy feel.

And who am I really?

I’m Adelaide, I’m 27 years old and I live with my husband in the Blue Mountains. In a small house that is built very high up a mountain. We have 33 steep stony steps to our front deck and a view overlooking a wonderful valley that I love to knit and gaze at. We bush walk, garden, cook, spoil our two cheeky cats - Jet and Amber - and have cold winters where snow falls up here (which in Australia is really rare).

I've been crocheting since I was a little girl. I taught myself to knit eight years ago and I also love to stitch, sew, quilt and just make! I've been lucky enough to work, teach and design in two wool shops, two quilting shops and a needlecraft store.
